‘Mentally disturbed’ man beats father to death in Karachi

KARACHI: A man “suffering from some mental disorder” beat his elderly father to death in Khawaja Ajmer Nagri on Friday, police said.

They said the suspect identified as Shahid in his early 30s used to stay mostly at home in Zarina Colony for the past couple of years.

It is said that Shahid was suffering from “mental stress” due to unemployment and financial crisis.

“His neighbours also recalled several incidents in which Shahid engaged in fights and argued with people,” said an official at the Khawaja Ajmer Nagri police station.

“Today [Friday] early in the morning, Shahid and his 65-year-old father Jamal Khan had a heated argument over some issue and Shahid attacked his father with an iron pipe. After suffering multiple blows, the father fell down and died while being taken to hospital.”

He said Shahid fled after the incident.

The police had registered an FIR against the suspect on the complaint of his younger brother, he added. Late on Friday evening police said the suspect was apprehended.

Official held for ‘drunk driving, brawl’

An assistant commissioner of the Sindh revenue department and his subordinate were arrested early on Friday morning after they were found driving a car while drunk and challenging police when their illegal activity was identified, officials said.

They said that a suspicious car without registration plate was spotted near Regal Chowk, Saddar, by a police mobile on patrol in the area.

“They were intercepted and stopped and asked to show their identity and documents of the car,” said a Saddar police official.

“The men in the car misbehaved with the police, challenged their authority and refused to cooperate with the police. They even threatened the policemen of dire consequences if the police did not let them go.”

During the quarrel, he said, it emerged that the men in the car were government officials and they were apparently driving under the influence of alcohol.

“One of the men was identified as assistant commissioner revenue Ahsan Anees and the other his subordinate Sahil. The police immediately took the men in custody and took them to the Civil Hospital Karachi for test where they were found under the influence of alcohol,” said the official and added that both the men were booked and arrested.
