From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1971: Fifty Years Ago: Fighting in Amman

AMMAN: Heavy fighting broke out in Amman today (Feb 11) between Palestinian guerrillas and Jordanian Forces, Palestinian officials announced. They said officials handed out weapons to guerrillas militia to use against troops. … In Cairo, the Palestinian Central Committee announced that 600 Jordanian troops backed by armour this morning begun storming the redeployment centre for Palestinian militia in Amman’s Jebel-el-Hamian district.

The attack followed the shelling of the militia building and other civilian structures in the area by heavy artillery, the Palestinian spokesman said. Weapons from the militia depot were then distributed to the civilians and a number of persons — both militia and civilians — were killed and wounded in the ensuing clashes.

[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Washington] Finance Minister Pinchas Sapir of Israel yesterday [Feb 10] arranged for a series of conferences with the US officials to discuss additional economic and military credit for his country. … Israel has already received 500 million dollars in credit, consisting of two loans, one is for 50 million dollars ... and the other of 350 million dollars....
