First-year girl gang raped in Karachi, three suspects held

KARACHI: Police on Friday claimed to have arrested three suspects over allegation of gang raping a first-year girl student in Gulshan-i-Hadeed.

Malir SSP Irfan Bahadur said that the girl was kidnapped by the suspects in Gulshan-i-Hadeed.

She was subjected to criminal assault and then thrown from a car in Defence Housing Authority.

She had reportedly left her home to go to college in Gulshan-i-Hadeed on Feb 9 when she was kidnapped by the suspects in a car.

She was found by the Defence police on the next day, who informed the Steel Town police about recovery of a girl.

The Steel Town police registered an FIR against three nominated suspects on the complaint of the girl’s father. The suspects have been arrested.

Meanwhile, the SSP along with the investigation team members on Friday visited the residence and met the girl’s parents and assured them of justice, according to a police spokesperson.

A special team comprising senior police officers has been set up, which is likely to submit its report on daily basis to authorities.

Investigation has been launched after arrest of all the nominated suspects. Medical examination of the held suspects was being carried out and their DNA samples had been taken for further investigation.

The Malir SSP said that the girl’s medical examination had also been carried out by a lady medico-legal officer at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

The police were waiting for the doctors’ final reports to initiate further legal proceedings in the case.

SSP Malir Irfan Bahadur told Dawn that the final medical reports were expected within the next few days.

The rape victim’s father told journalists that the police were fully cooperating with the family.

He said when he visited the Steel Town police station, the police registered an FIR immediately and carried out raids for arrest of the suspects who were arrested.

He expressed the hope that the senior police officers who visited his residence on Friday would provide justice to the family by ensuring exemplary punishment to the suspects.
