Two drug peddlers killed in ‘encounter’

GUJAR KHAN: Jhelum police on Monday claimed that two drug peddlers were killed from the firing of their accomplices when a police team raided their hideout on Sunday night.

Addressing a press conference, DPO Jhelum Shakir Hussain Dawar said three policemen also received injuries.

He said the outlaws opened fire on the police team when it raided their hideout in the jurisdiction of city police station.

When the police party reached Mohallah Malaah the drug peddlers’ families including women started throwing stones and flower pots on the policemen from rooftops and also opened fire on the police party, he said.

According to SHO Ayaz Janjua, when the firing stopped police entered their house and found two drug peddlers killed allegedly during indiscriminate firing of the outlaws.

While talking to Dawn Jhelum District Police Officer Shakir Hussain Dawar said the area was notorious for bootlegging, drug peddling and other criminal activities, and the outlaws killed in the encounter were wanted in many cases by the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police.

The DPO added that police had recovered 1,440 grams hashish, 115 bottles of liquor, 1,340 grams heroin and huge quantity of sophisticated weapons from the hideout.

Police said four suspects had been arrested whereas two main suspects managed to escape.

The injured policemen were immediately shifted to the DHQ Hospital Jhelum and Benazir Bhutto Hospital Rawalpindi.
