KOHAT: The Kohat police recovered arms and ammunition from a shop in the main bazaar during an intelligence-based operation on Friday.

The police accompanied by the elite force personnel conducted the raid led by SHO city Asif Mehmood, and arrested a suspect, Ayazuddin, from the shop and shifted him to the city police station, according to a statement.

The seizure included 44 pistols, seven 12-bore repeaters, 50 chargers and 1,124 cartridges.

The elite force has been deployed at the important squares and patrolling has intensified. The security of sensitive installations has also been beefed up after the seizure.

A case was registered against the trader for keeping illegal weapons in his shop.

In a separate development, deputy commissioner Abdur Rehman inaugurated phased-wise installation of 80 small and big dust bins and 10 containers in various parts of the city for collection of solid waste as Chief executive of the Water Supply and Sanitation Company Arif Rauf launched a cleanliness drive on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rehman said installation of dust bins would help resolve the problem of solid waste management in the city.

WSSC media manager Ms Alia, who supervised cleaning of the drains, said the drive would be carried out on Fridays because markets remained closed.

She advised the people not to put shopping bags in the drains as it choked them, stopping water flow. She said shopkeepers should use biodegradable bags and dispose them of in the dust bins or at the designated places.

Separately, the women blocked the Hangu Bypass Road on Friday night against suspension of electricity in Hafizabad town for last five days.

The protesting women placed big stones on the road resulting in long queues of trucks coming from Parachinar and Afghanistan while on way to Karachi.

The negotiations between the elders with the SHO city police continued till filing of this report. Nobody from Pesco turned up to calm down the protesters and assure them to resolve the problem, Mr Pervez, a local resident, regretted.

The women chanted slogans against the Pesco for not repairing the faulty transformer, which had also caused acute water shortage in the area.
