From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1971: Fifty Years Ago: Provincial bar councils
ISLAMABAD: The Government is contemplating to reorganise the Bar Councils on provincial basis as a consequence of the dissolution of One Unit in West Pakistan, it was officially stated yesterday [Feb 27]. A Press Note issued by Ministry of Law said that the Government has formulated some proposals to elicit opinion of the provincial Governments, High Courts, Bar Councils and Bar Associations. Necessary legislation would be undertaken after receiving their views. One of the proposals is to set up a provincial Bar Council for each of the provinces of East Pakistan, the Punjab, North-West Frontier and a common provincial Bar Council for the provinces of Sind and Baluchistan.
Another proposal is that the elections to the provincial Bar Councils would be district-wise. Each district will be multi-member constituency... . There will be no nominated members.
[Meanwhile, as reported by agencies in Moscow] The Soviet Union today [Feb 28] accused Israel of having “Acted openly as an aggressor” in its recent Note replying to the latest proposals of UN Middle East peace mediator Dr Gunnar Jarring and charged that the United States was behind this “last Israeli obstructionist move.”
