From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1971: Fifty Years Ago: Praying in Cordoba

KARACHI: The mayor of the Spanish City of Cardova, Mr. Antonio Guzman Reina, said in Karachi yesterday [March 1], that the government of Spain was taking steps to allow the Muslims to pray at the grand Mosque of Cardova.

Speaking at the Iqbal Academy ... the Mayor said that the Roman Catholic Government allows full freedom of worship to the followers of other religions. He said a Mosque has been built in Madrid with active co-operation of the Pakistani Embassy. There are also Jews temples and churches for the Protestants. Cardova, he said, will be the centre of Islamic studies for the visiting Muslims from other countries and there will be an attached Mosque. He praised Allama Iqbal, who had written a poem on the Mosque of Cardova, and said that one of the City’s squares had been named after him. — Correspondent

[Meanwhile, as reported by a correspondent in Hyderabad,] Over 200 Hindu landlords of Sind have ... managed to cross into India ... along with gold ornaments, cattle and other valuables during the last month. These landlords, who sold most of their property before their departure, are understood to have left bag and baggage in three batches of camel caravans on different dates and from different talukas of Tharparkar....
