Officials depriving women of inheritance share warned of action

SWABI: The district administration here has decided to take action against officials of the revenue department involved in any violation of inheritance rights of women in property transfer/mutation, according to sources.

Sources in the district administration told this correspondent that women had legal inheritance rights like men and the officials should avoid indulging in wrong practices for their personal gains.

According to law, in case of death of a person the land is to be transferred to all members of the family, including women, but it is a common practice that people deprive women of such rights while remaining in league with the officials of revenue department.

A communiqué issued by the office of Swabi deputy commissioner says that according to the law no one should be deprived of the property rights by anyone.

When contacted, DC Shahid Mehmood told this correspondent that they had done the analysis of revenue cases under process in the revenue office.

He said that over 70 per cent of the cases were related to non-adherence to inheritance rules wherein women had not been given their due share as per law. “Later, they have to file cases to claim their due share,” he said.

Mr Mehmood said the inheritance right of women was a compulsory part of the laws and it should be upheld. He said all mutations of inheritance should be completed till March 31 by the revenue department officials and the same should be approved from him with the valid documents.
