Dress code

REGARDLESS of the controversy surrounding the prime minister’s remarks about the relationship between ‘lack of modesty’ and ‘rape’, there can be no doubt that a broad dress code is very much part of our religious and cultural norms.

In our religion, modesty is seen as a sign of respect for oneself and others, and this includes both men and women. It allows Muslims to conduct their lives with respect, dignity and modesty.

There is also an element of identity. Men and women are both encouraged to wear clothes that may identify them as Muslims. Likewise, clothes that generate feelings of pride and arrogance need to be avoided.

In short, we should dress properly with dignity, respect and modesty.
