HYDERABAD: SU students oppose four-year degree course

HYDERABAD, Oct 20: A large number of students of Sindh University staged a demonstration outside the press club here on Thursday in protest against introduction of four-year degree programme.

They raised slogans against Prof Agha Riaz and the new system.

Speaking on the occasion, JSSF leader Nisar Lakhair, Raja Korai and Mustafa Kamal, STPSF leader Akhtar Buledi, SPSF-SB leader Mazhar Jamali and SPSF leader Mir Turab criticized the introduction of four-year degree programme by the Sindh university authorities.

They demanded that transport in-charge Agha Riaz and university registrar Mohammad Saleh Rajar be removed.

SNP: Sindh National Party Chairman Amir Bhambhro has announced that a series of protest demonstrations will be held in Sindh from Oct 21 in protest against abolition of simple Sindhi language subject in class-XI.

He announced that a conference of writers, intellectuals, nationalists and political parties would also be held on October 27 on the issue.

He was speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Thursday.

He said that the conference would evolve strategy to resist conspiracies of an ethnic group to eliminate Sindhi language.

He said the national, social cultural and constitutional rights of Sindhi nation were being violated and an unrepresentative government had been imposed on Sindh.

He said after the 1972 language riots, conspiracies were again being hatched after 23 years to engineer disturbances in Sindh.

Mr Bhambhro said that his party had never extended a hand of friendship to the group because the group was simply staging a farce of being Sindhis.

He said the MQM had never supported the Sindhi people on the Kalabagh dam, greater Thal canal and NFC Award issues.

He also assailed the point of view of ethnic group on the rehabilitation of the outsiders in Sindh issuing of NICs to aliens and demolition of Sindhi villages in Karachi.

He accused the rulers of patronizing the said ethnic group and called upon conscientious Urdu-speaking writers, intellectuals, journalists and common men to oppose conspiracies against the Sindhi language.

He demanded that the provincial minister for education, Dr Hamida Khuhro, should immediately resign from her post and Sindhi language be introduced as a compulsory subject from primary to the graduation level.

SHC: The president of the Sindh Hari Committee, Mr Azhar Jatoi, has also criticized the Sindh governor for abolishing the teaching of simple Sindhi language to students of class-XI.

He was speaking at a meeting of the central committee of his party held here on Thursday.

He said that it was a calculated move of the Sindh governor against the Sindhi language and that the decision was likely to create a gulf between Urdu and Sindhi speaking people.

He also criticized the decision to reintroduce the Sindhi language bill 1972 in the Sindh assembly.

Mr Jatoi strongly opposed the rehabilitation of the earthquake victims in Karachi.

Expressing sympathies with earthquake victims, he said Karachi was not an international orphanage where the people from all over the world should be rehabilitated.
