BOOKS IN BRIEF

Pakistan and Superpowers: A Historical Perspective
Mehrunissa Ali

A collection of articles previously published in various journals, books and newspapers provides a historical perspective of the impact on Pakistan’s foreign relations as a result of the involvement of superpowers in regional conflicts. The author examines four decades of interference to explain Pakistan’s navigation of foreign relations with the erstwhile Soviet Union, the United States, China, Afghanistan and Indonesia among others.

Children of the North
Niddal bin Tahir

“Every idiot north and south of Islamabad travels to Shogran in the holiday season. We need to venture where people seldom go ... that is where the real stories lie.” And so, with a borrowed jeep and a stash of hash, four boys from Islamabad — a feudal lord-in-the-making, a military cadet-turned-computer engineer, a middle-class youngster strapped for cash and a ringleader of the “wrong” crowd — set out for the adventure of a lifetime.
