Six-year-old boy with rabies dies

KARACHI: A six-year-old boy who reported at the Indus Hospital with full-blown rabies on Friday died at the facility in the night, hospital staff told Dawn.

The boy was bitten by a dog on his face and shoulder in the Garden area over three weeks ago.

“It was heartbreaking to see the child in a painful condition. The hospital counseled the family about rabies and provided the child with palliative care so he could die in peace,” said Aftab Gohar, manager of the Rabies Prevention Centre at hospital.

Rabies could only be prevented with proper vaccination but the disease is fatal if its signs and symptoms appear, according to him.
