Legislation planned for journalists protection

PESHAWAR: Following in the footsteps of the centre, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has also decided to table a journalists protection bill in the provincial assembly.

The federal government had on Friday last tabled the much-awaited Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Bill, 2021, in the National Assembly aimed at protecting journalists and media professionals.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the provincial government spokesperson Kamran Khan Bangash said the proposed bill would be a continuation of the PTI government’s pro-journalism measures.

He said the bill would soon be tabled in the provincial legislature. He said the legislation would also cover other important issues, including the basic rights of journalists, their training, insurance and investigation-related matters.

Mr Bangash said the chief minister wanted to provide all facilities and privileges to the journalists as an independent media was part of the manifesto of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.
