PTA seeks cut in 53pc taxes, duties on tea

KARACHI: The Pakistan Tea Association (PTA) has urged the government to slash duties and taxes on import of tea — currently at 53 per cent — and provide relief to consumers.

In a meeting held on May 24, a PTA delegation led by its chairman Aman Paracha urged Commerce Adviser Abdul Razak Dawood that tea should be considered as the common man’s food item.

Accumulated duties and taxes on import of tea are currently around 53pc which is even more than luxury items, the association said.

The PTA delegation also highlighted various

ambiguities and anomalies in tea trade and said that the government can earn better revenue if these are removed.
