SHC issues notices to police chief
KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Monday issued notices to the provincial police chief and other police officials on a petition seeking the whereabouts of a citizen.
A relative of the allegedly detained person through her lawyer approached the SHC and contended that the police had picked up Maroof Solangi from his house within the remit of the Surjani Town police station on May 30.
The petitioner maintained that the police were demanding bribes for the release of the detainee and expressed the apprehension that in case of non-payment he might be killed in a staged encounter.
The two-judge bench headed by Justice Yousuf Ali Sayeed asked the petitioner’s lawyer why they had not approached a sessions court with a habeas corpus petition under Section 491 of the Criminal Procedure Code for the recovery of the alleged detainee.
The counsel contended that the victim was being detained at an undisclosed location.
The bench issued notices to the IGP, SSP-West, Surjani Town SHO and other respondents for June 21.
