Lawyers observe black day against judge’s elevation

LAHORE: The legal fraternity on Wednesday observed “black day” to protest a proposal floated again before the Judicial Commission for elevation of Sindh High Court (SHC) junior judge to the apex court.

Speaking at a general house meeting of the Lahore High Court Bar Association, the lawyers said the proposal to elevate a junior judge was in violation of the apex court’s judgment famously known as Al-Jihad Trust and Asad Ali cases.

They said if the SC violated its own decisions, how others would comply with its decisions.

They demanded the apex court to honour its judgments and follow the principle of seniority in the elevation of the judges.

LHCBA’s president Maqsood Buttar said the legal fraternity always stood for the rule of law and supremacy of the Constitution. He said if the past decisions of the SC had flaws there should be a consultation process among all the stakeholders to devise new parameters for the elevation of the judges.

The house fully endorsed unanimously passed resolution of the Sindh High Court Bar Association, Karachi. The lawyers also boycotted courts and remained away from routine work.
