12 detained over Peshawar clash
PESHAWAR: The police have detained 12 people following a clash between two groups belonging to Mohmand tribal district here on Thursday.
The incident took place outside a private Pashto TV channel’s offices on Abdara Road area in University Town as a group protesting against a journalist of the TV channel clashed with his supporters.
The clash turned the road into a battleground.
The protesters from both sides beat up each other with sticks and threw whatever they got hold of at each other.
At least four people were reportedly injured in the incident. In a statement, the City police claimed that the issue was resolved through a jirga.
They said the jirga took place in the presence of the office-bearers of Khyber Union of Journalists and Peshawar Press Club.
The police claimed that some members of Essakhel Mohmand tribe had announced a sit-in outside the TV channel’s office, which turned violent. They said they foiled the protesters’ attempt to storm the TV channel’s offices.
The police also said the issue was later resolved through a jirga with the Essakhel Mohmand tribe formally regretting the incident.
Peshawar Press Club general secretary Imran Bukhari said the issue had been resolved amicably.
