Level of (in)tolerance

A STRANGE view caught my attention recently that involved removing and covering up of the posters of main opposition leaders in order to be put out of sight apparently because of the expected VIP visit to the area.

The very first thought that popped into my head was that of a ‘proud’ nation finding it hard to digest the sight of opposition leaders on posters, indicating the low level of tolerance that is becoming a hallmark of society.

We have for some time been divided on the basis of sect, caste, race and ethnicity. Political division is just an addition to the list. Although this division is not new to the people, the hostile attitude of our political leaders, who waste no opportunity of bashing each other, has given a completely new look to this division.

Unfortunately, the folks are following their leaders in this hostility, forgetting all the ethics and moral values which we, being the bearers of Islamic teachings, must never forget. National integrity was one of the elements that were held dear by the Quaid-i-Azam who always emphasised the need for national unity.

The increasing rift and hostility between political rivals and lack of tolerance for each other is a great threat to the cause of national integrity. The matter is of great and grave concern.
