KOHAT: Police arrested 194 suspects during operations in different areas of the district on Monday to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram.

The arrested persons also included five proclaimed offenders, their nine facilitators and several Afghan refugees besides 180 suspects.

Police also seized five Kalashnikovs, two Kalakovs, three 12 bore repeaters, seven rifles, 13 pistols, 30 chargers, six kilograms of hashish, 130 grams of heroin and hundreds of cartridges from the arrested persons.

Besides different rural and urban areas, the operations were conducted in six Afghan refugee camps in the district.

Lady police, bomb disposal squad, sniffer dogs also took part in the raids.

Earlier, police busted an alleged thief for stealing costly items by breaking into shops on Hangu Road during the last few weeks.

The arrested man is a resident of Parachinar, Kurram district.

Police recovered five electric batteries, one generator, 110 cartons of cigarettes, four car tyres and one licenced pistol from him.

DEMAND: The local elders and social activists have demanded of the authorities to transfer ‘incompetent’ officials of communication and works department to tribal districts for their failure to complete two schools in the district by June 30.

The office-bearers of a joint platform of all the social organisations of the district, Sons of Kohat, Tabish, and Shah Mehmood said on Monday that the primary school for girls in Mohallah Mian Bad Shah and girls high school No.3 should have been completed June 30 according to the timeline of the projects.

They said that the schools should have been made functional within the stipulated time.

July had passed and there were no signs of completion of work on the school buildings, they added.

VISIT: The accountant general of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murtaza Khan, during a daylong visit to the district comptroller office on Monday announced authorisation of pay fixation by the district account officers.

He said that delay in payment of pension and salaries should be avoided and complicated cases should be brought into the notice of district administration.
