Shaheen stars as Pakistan beat West Indies to draw series

KINGSTON: Shaheen Shah Afridi produced a sterling 10-wicket performance to enable Pakistan to defeat West Indies by 109 runs to share honours in their two-match Test series at Sabina Park in Kingston on Tuesday.

Chasing an improbable target of 329, West Indies were always struggling as they limped to 159-7 when rain stopped play in the afternoon session, which saw early tea taken.

After resumption, Pakistan claimed the remaining three wickets to dismiss the home team for 219, with Jason Holder contributing a defiant 47 until he was caught at short cover by Fawad Alam off slow left-armer Nauman Ali, who also had sent back West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite for 39 just after lunch.

But Shaheen was the star as he captured the final two wickets after Pakistan skipper Babar Azam opted for the second new ball. The tall left-armer struck a vital blow just as rain drove the players off the field by breaking a threatening seventh-wicket stand between Kyle Mayers and Holder.

Shaheen struck with just his third delivery of the afternoon when he had Mayers caught behind by wicket-keeper Mohammed Rizwan for 32 as the left-hander, who had dominated a stand of 46 with the former captain, drove at a full-length delivery.

Shaheen followed up career-best figures of 6-51 in the first innings with four wickets for 43 runs in 17.2 overs, giving the 21-year-old Pakistan bowling spearhead match haul of 10-94.

Nauman ended with three wickets for 52 runs from 22 overs after replacing leg-spinner Yasir Shah for this Test.

Shaheen Afridi was adjudged both player-of-the-match and player-of-the-series after finishing with a rich bag of 18 wickets across the two games.

West Indies had won a low-scoring first Test at the same venue last week by one wicket in dramatic circumstances as Pakistan dropped catches at crucial junctures.
