Swabi varsity to issue notices to employees over fake degrees

SWABI: The University of Swabi (UoS) will soon issue show cause notices to its employees for their alleged involved in issuing fake degrees and transcripts to the failed candidates, sources in the varsity told Dawn on Wednesday.

They said that in the light of the minutes approved by the university syndicate on Tuesday show cause notices would be issued to the employees to explain their position.

The sources said that if the officials failed to give a satisfactory reply to the committee members or syndicate they would be expelled from service for violation of rules.

As the UoS is a public sector university the management has to go through prolonged legal process and a direct action could not be taken, said the sources.

They said that a total of 56 fake degrees and transcripts were issued in 2015, 2016 and 2017 by the employees working in the office of the controller of examinations and all these documents were having the signatures of the high-ranking officials, including the registrar.

56 fake degrees and transcripts were issued in three years

They said the names of the officials were mentioned in the GovernorInspection Team (GIT) report received by the university.

The sources said the issue surfaced when controller of examinations got a complaint that one of the students who received the degree was actually absent from the exams.

When contacted, the varsity’s acting vice-chancellor Sayed Mukarram Shah said: “The Governor Inspection Team and FIA both had already completed their investigations and submitted their findings to the university for required legal action.”

Answering a question, he said action would be taken in the light of these findings.

Sources in the university said the fake degree and transcript holders would also face action. They said that NAB, KP, had also initiated an inquiry into financial irregularities in the university in the projects and appointment of employees.

They said political meddling in the university’s affairs had further complicated the issues.

The acting VC of the University of Swabi is also acting VC of Women University, Swabi, whose VC has been sent on forced leave by the KP governor.
