SCHOOL AND EQUALITY

SCHOOL AND EQUALITY: I recently met the father of a six-year-old boy who had recently got a second chance at life after cancer treatment. But, unfortunately, this chance is fraught with inequalities where he does not have access to a school. The father wants to send his child to school, but the nearest one is several miles away from their village and the boy cannot undertake such a long journey on foot. This is not an isolated story. While the government is focussed on the implementation of the controversial curriculum, it should make education accessible to the majority.

VULNERABLE DATA: This is with reference to the article ‘Land record online’ (Sept 10). The government seems too keen to digitise everything, from voting system to land records, but it should keep in mind the vulnerability of online data in the absence of mandatory security measures as cyberattacks are rampant these days globally. Besides the hacking incidents of government websites, many more take place in Pakistan every day.

IRRESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR: In the wake of the decision to impose lockdown recently, scores of university students, coming from different cities to Lahore, faced hardship as examinations were cancelled at the eleventh hour.

This was extremely irresponsible behaviour on the part of the universities. They should be more professional in their planning and management.

DADU IN BAD SHAPE: Bad governance has been rampant in Dadu district for long as both the past and present leaders have failed to provide livelihood opportunities for the locals. Water-theft by the big land-owners has destroyed the lives of the average farmers. Deserted schools, crumbled roads, nepotism and favouritism in jobs, almost non-existent healthcare, shortage of drinking water and other basic amenities means life in Dadu is a bed of thorns.
