Crackdown on illegal weapons launched in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Capital police have announced that they have started a crackdown on illegal weapons.

Addressing a press conference at Rescue 15 on Wednesday, DIG (Operations) Afzaal Ahmed Kousar said he had directed the officials concerned to launch a crackdown on people possessing illegal weapons, adding that law breakers created law and order situation, harassed public and played with the lives of innocent people.

Mr Kousar said the police would adopt a zero-tolerance policy when it came to crime in the federal capital.

He told mediapersons that the police had registered cases and arrested 30 suspects for possessing illegal weapons and impounded seven vehicles.

The DIG said licences would stand cancelled if a licensed weapon was used in a crime, adding that action was being taken in the wake of recent incidents of targeted attacks in which innocent people were killed.

Snap-checking across the city has been started and weapons in the possession of security guards and private gunmen were being scrutinised, he added.

He said the seized weapons include 23 pistols, four 9mm pistols, a kalashnikov, a 222 gun, three 12-bore guns and hundreds of live rounds.

He requested the public not to carry weapon as the police would not spare anyone.
