Move to revoke ban on TLP okayed

ISLAMABAD: Stage is set for revocation of ban on the Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) that was outlawed on April 15 after staging violent protests across the country.

Informed sources told Dawn that Prime Minister Imran Khan had approved for his cabinet’s nod by circulation a summary seeking revocation of the ban on the TLP, to give effect to an agreement recently reached with the group after another round of violent protests by it.

In view of the commitment and assurance given by the TLP as well as “keeping in view the larger national interest”, the Punjab cabinet has asked the federal government to consider revocation of ban on the TLP, the summary reads.

The summary also mentions that the TLP made a request to the Punjab government for revocation of ban on it on April 29.

A proscription review committee was then constituted to decide on the matter which concluded that the government’s decision to declare the TLP a proscribed outfit was “based on merit”.
