Woman killed for ‘honour’ outside sessions court

GUJRAT: A young woman was allegedly killed over an “honour” issue by unidentified men immediately after she came out of the sessions court compound in the precincts of Civil Lines police here on Monday.

According to witnesses and police, two unidentified men on a motorcycle intercepted a car on the Court Road and pulled out its driver. The attackers then opened fire at a woman, later identified as Muneeba Bibi, 25, of Kunjah town, who was in the car, leaving her dead on the spot.

The assailants fled the scene soon after the incident.

A spokesman for Gujrat police told Dawn that the deceased woman had eloped with one Adnan, a resident of her native Kunjah town around two weeks ago, and the couple later contracted court marriage in Rawalpindi.

The woman’s family had got registered a kidnapping case against Adnan and his brother Rizwan under section 365B with Kunjah police. Later the police arrested Rizwan in the kidnapping case.

He said Muneeba had arrived in Gujrat to record her statement before the court that she had not been kidnapped and contracted marriage of her own choice.

He said she came to the court in a car with a driver and was targeted as soon she left the court premises.

Police reached the spot and shifted her body to the Aziz Bhatti Shaheed Teaching Hospital for autopsy, whereas a team also collected forensic evidence from the crime scene.

The spokesman said police had started investigation and footage of closed-circuit cameras installed in the area were being gathered. He said the FIR had been registered on the complaint of her husband against woman’s father, brother and a kin.
