PPP senator seeks strategy to get rid of IMF

ISLAMABAD: Former interior minister and PPP Senator A. Rehman Malik has called for hammering out a joint strategy to permanently get rid of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Warning against the passage by parliament of a bill that will make the SBP answerable to the IMF, he said in such a case the government would have little say in the country’s fiscal policy. Speaking to reporters, he said this would mean a compromise on country’s sovereignty and the future of its generations as economic stability and independence were inextricably linked with the national security. Malik, who is also chairman of the Institute of Research and Reforms, warned that accepting IMF’s demands would be a recipe of disaster.
