NCHR holds consultation with stakeholders

PESHAWAR: The National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) here on Thursday held a strategic consultation with various stakeholders to ensure the success of the commission and protection of human rights.

NCHR chairperson Rabiya Javeri Agha, KP member Tariq Javed, coordinator Rizwanullah Shah, representative of Huqooq-e-Pakistan Dr Osama Siddiqui, provincial stakeholders, representatives of civil society and media and human rights activists attended the event.

A statement issued here said that the mandate of NCHR was presented at the meeting and the issues faced by the participants were discussed.

The participants said that the commission should use its powers to ensure the protection of human rights in the country.

“If any law is made in the country, it must be monitored from the beginning and all those who work for human rights must be taken into confidence,” they said.

The participants said that in most places there was a difficulty in enforcing the human rights laws, mainly due to the fact that no rules had been laid down for the purpose.

They said that there was an urgent need to formulate rules for the NCHR law first.

They said that the commission should create awareness among the people of the human rights and who was protecting them.

The NCHR chairperson said that the commission in consultation with the partners in the four provinces was working out a joint strategy to address the issues and challenges.
