SC forms five regular benches for next week

ISLAMABAD: Chief Jus­tice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed has constituted four regular benches at the principal seat of Islamabad and one bench at the Supreme Court’s Karachi registry to hear a number of important cases during the week starting today (Monday).

The first bench comprises CJP Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel and Justice Sayyed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi while the second comprises Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan.

The third bench comprises Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Yahya Afridi, whereas the fourth comprises Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan, Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar would hear cases at the apex court’s Karachi registry.

The benches will hear many important cases, including service and pension matters of government employees, educational institutions matters, labour cases, appeals against death sentences and life impri­sonment, appeals against acquittal of accused in murder and corruption cases, bail appeals in National Accounta­bility Bureau’s (NAB) cases, election petitions of different politicians, etc.

The cases to be heard over the next week include NAB’s appeal seeking the cancellation of bail of Imran Mohsin, a private urea broker and the main accused in accountability reference number 12/2016 regarding the misappropriation of imported urea worth Rs216.6 million and selling it in the open market in connivance with the employees of Bilal Carriage Company and officials of National Fertilisers Management Ltd.

Another case pertains to NAB’s appeal against Azgard Nine Ltd CFO Abid Amin, who was involved in selling shares of a subsidiary company at a higher market price to the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) in collaboration with NBP employees under obligation to repay a certain amount,

The Supreme Court will also hear a case related to the cancellation of bail of Abdur Rehman and others in accountability reference number 10/2016 regarding the misappropriation of government funds meant for distribution as compensation amongst the affectees of a military operation carried out in Bajaur Agency in connivance with the officials of the erstwhile Fata Disaster Management Authority,

One case pits the Competition Commission of Pakistan and others against Dalda Foods Ltd Karachi regarding excessive pricing of ghee/cooking oil.
