THE volume of vehicular traffic has increased considerably in Mingora, making the life of the locals harder than ever. The main trunk road and the adjoining roads passing through Mingora city were built for much less traffic compared to the present flow which is simply beyond control and is causing bottlenecks at various places.

Another key issue that is creating severe traffic congestion is the lack of proper digital traffic signals. It is a serious problem for commuters as well as the traffic police.

Besides, the city’s population has recorded exponential growth over the last few years. In fact, it has doubled since 2010. What is aggravating the situation even further is careless driving and zero regard for traffic laws. You can hardly find drivers using indicators while taking turns or changing lanes. Most drivers overtake from the wrong side and there are no proper parking places and marked U-turns.

Furthermore, a proliferation of non-custom-paid (NCP) vehicles on the roads has added to the traffic quantum. Worryingly, the relevant authorities do not seem to have a proper record of such vehicles.

There are also a large number of stalls and shops on the roadside. Most shopkeepers have arranged their goods outdoors, narrowing the road even further and creating troubles for the commuters.

Having said that, it will be tough to either relocate them to other places or just force them to shut down their businesses. A concerted effort is needed in this regard to find a workable solution.

Unfortunately, the government has turned a blind eye to this traffic mess faced daily by the people in Mingora. The authorities need to act, and act fast. Apart from widening the roads, the government needs to launch an awareness campaign for the public and seek suggestions on improving the traffic flow. It should also regularly monitor road conditions besides ensuring annual automobile inspection.
