TEACHERS AND MANAGERS

TEACHERS AND MANAGERS: This is with reference to the letter ‘Teachers and managers’ (Jan 13). The job of the head of an educational institution is to lead and guide the staff in pedagogical and research activities which an ordinary manager cannot do. The main function of an institution of higher learning is to improve the standards of teaching, learning and research, and not to just improve the facade of the buildings and keep the lawns green. This much can be left to the managers and supervisors who work under the academic leader.

HOSPITAL NEGLIGENCE: I went to the Bolan Medical Complex (BMC) recently to donate blood for a relative. The situation of the emergency ward was pathetic. The young staff who took my blood did not use a spirit swab on my arm to ward off the possibility of transmissible diseases, and, when reminded, he got offended. The authorities concerned should keep an eye on such negligence.

WRONG QUESTIONS: The Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC), after denying errors earlier, posted revised answer keys for some tests, awarding the candidates eight grace marks on account of four errors. Some questions were even cancelled after the review, but the SPSC has not compensated the candidates on account of the cancelled questions. This is sheer injustice.

HARSH WINTERS: As the winter season has set in and there has been a few spells of rain already with a forecast for more, it is not uncommon to find people who cannot afford to buy warm clothes to protect themselves from harsh weather conditions. Women and children suffer the most in such a scenario. We should check out our wardrobes and spare the less used or optional clothes for the needy ones to make things easy for our fellow human beings.
