KARACHI: The National Accountability Bureau-Rawalpindi on Tuesday carried out a raid in Karachi, arrested three officials of the district municipal corporation (DMC) Korangi and recovered Rs70 million cash, foreign currency, jewellery and prize bonds, etc.

Officials said that former DMC-Korangi municipal commissioner Masroor Memon, accounts officer Vikash and audit officer Dharam Veer had allegedly embezzled millions of rupees in purchase of petrol and other items.

They gave contracts to favourites after taking bribes and purchased oil on cheaper rates but showed receipts of higher rates in official record.

The NAB claimed that the money got through illegal means was deposited in “fake bank accounts” and transferred abroad as well.

NAB claimed to have recovered Rs70m cash, gold ornaments, US dollars, dirham and riyals from their custody.

An official, who wished not to be named, told Dawn that it was not true that receipts of TT of millions were recovered as reported by a section of electronic media.

The officer explained that only cash and gold were recovered and NAB was in process of calculating their value.
