Businessmen voice concern over growing street crime

KARACHI: The business community on Monday expressed serious concern over growing incidents of street crime in Karachi and questioned the writ of the state and performance of law enforcement agencies.

In a statement, Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) president Muhammad Idrees said the law enforcement agencies had “remained totally unsuccessful” in dealing with the menace of street crime.

“A new trend has emerged in the city where people and commuters are being fearlessly intercepted and beaten by armed gunmen and security guards, either escorting or guarding vehicles bearing government number plates, fancy number plates or no number plates,” he said.

He said the KCCI had constantly been receiving complaints in which people and members of the business community were being beaten by armed gunmen or security guards with no proper identity.

“Display of proper identity of such guards has to be made mandatory so that they could easily be taken to task if found responsible for creating problems,” he said.
