2,500 cops to be deployed for re-polling in Darra, Kohat

KOHAT: District police officer Mohammad Suleman said on Friday that 2,500 policemen would be deployed in Kohat and the Darra Adamkhel tribal subdivision for the re-voting in 54 polling stations on Sunday (Feb 13).

The elections in various polling stations of Darra and Tappi areas were postponed due to violence and the death of a candidate.

A statement issued here said display of weapons, walk chalking and entry of Afghan refugees to the areas where re-polling would be held had been banned with the imposition of Section 144.

ANTI-ENCROACHMENT DRIVE: The district administration on Friday gave a three-day deadline to the shopkeepers to remove encroachments in the electronics market on the University Road, chicken market and in the Old Bus Stand area.

Assistant commissioner Atif Jalib and tehsil municipal administration officials visited the busy University Road and asked the electronics dealers to remove encroachments from the artery, or face action.

BAN DEMANDED: A jirga of Pirkhel, Mansoorkhel and Junglekhel tribes here the other day demanded of the district administration to ban washing of vehicles by transporters in the famous Jannat Gul Springs.

The jirga also called for action to stop playing of music at what they called the ‘sacred springs’ and ‘harassment’ of women there.

The jirga head, Syed Majid Bokhari Advocate, said clean drinking water was once supplied from the springs to Kohat and Rawalpindi cantonments in containers, but its pools had been turned into service stations for washing vehicles and carpets.

The water is believed to be a cure for chickenpox. The people also take water to their homes from there.

The administration had constructed two swimming pools and a shed for the people at the British-era building for containing the heavy flow of water at the mouth of the springs flowing since times unknown.

The jirga members after holding a meeting demanded a ban on the entry of vehicles to the area near the springs and said the people should park their vehicles at Toro Spin Square and walk to the springs.
