Three injured in attack on police station in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Three policemen were injured after assailants hurled two grenades inside the Phandu police station on the outskirts of the provincial capital on Saturday morning, officials said.

An officer of the police station told Dawn that the incident took place at about 6am. He said personnel of the bomb disposal unit confirmed that it was a grenade attack.

The officer said two of the injured policemen were discharged from hospital after treatment, while a third was also said to be in stable condition.

The injured policemen were identified as Qaiser, Sohail and Bacha.

SSP Peshawar Haroon Rashid said police were investigating the attack and CCTV footage was being examined along with other pieces of evidence.

The Counter-Terrorism Department also registered an FIR and opened an investigation into the case.

In response to a question, SSP Rashid said the police station had not received any threats.

APP quoted CCPO Ehsan Abbas as saying that a number suspects were apprehended soon after the incident.

He said there was a threat of similar attacks in the province. “(But) we are ready to deal with any situation and steps have been taken for ensuring pool-proof security.”

On February 3, two policemen were martyred and one was wounded in a gun attack on a checkpoint in the Jalozai area of Nowshera district.

The attackers, an official said, sped away after attacking the police. The driver of the van in which the personnel were travelling was wounded.
