From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1947: Seventy-five years ago: A shame redeemed

(EDITORIAL) The Punjab has been freed at last from the Great Evil of Unionism which has dramatically liquidated itself. That it has done so with the remnants of an unsuspected saving grace will be widely welcome. Malik Khizr Hyat Khan has shown himself wise after an unbroken period of folly. To say this is not to detract from the quality of his present action which restores to him that stature as man and politician which he seemed to have irretrievably lost. …Having said this, we offer Malik Khizr Hyat our congratulations and greetings for having redeemed himself at last. From other Muslim quarters also — quarters which have suffered in many ways at his hands and through his policy — he will undoubtedly be receiving similar good wishes and expressions of forgiveness, which only shows how one touch of sincerity makes the Muslims wondrous kind.

… It is now for the minorities to respond to that generosity and we trust that even they who, at the instigation of outsiders have been indulging in irresponsible sword-rattling, will realise that they have everything to gain by offering their co-operation to the natural majority in the Punjab.
