NCHR member reviews facilities at Peshawar prison
PESHAWAR: The National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR) member from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Tariq Javed, said on Thursday that the commission would continue its efforts for improving the plight of prisoners and conditions of prisons in the province.
This he stated during a visit to the Peshawar Central Prison during which he, along with his team, went to different sections and inquired from prisoners about problems being faced by them.
The member/commissioner stated that under the National Commission for Human Rights Act, 2012, it was in their functions to visit prisons or any other place of detention and to find out whether the provisions of laws related to the inmates living conditions and their other rights were being complied with.
Prison’s superintendent Umair Khan briefed the visiting team about facilities provided to the prisoners. He accompanied them to different portions, including male, female and juvenile sections, etc.
The member inquired from the prisoners about the facilities being provided to them during Ramazan. Expressing satisfaction over the facilities, Mr Javed hoped that the rights of prisoners won’t be violated.
