World’s longest wooden rollercoaster
Officials at an Ohio theme park said a wooden rollercoaster, officially dubbed the world’s longest, has broken its own record by getting two feet longer.
The Kings Island amusement park in Mason announced The Beast, which is recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest wooden rollercoaster, went from 7,359 feet of track to 7,361 feet, thanks to recent renovation work.
The park said upgrades to the coaster include a steeper first drop. The Beast was named the world’s longest wooden rollercoaster when it opened in 1979 and has held the distinction ever since.
Robot dog patrol the ruins of Pompeii
Officials in Italy said they have enlisted the service of a robot dog to patrol the ancient ruins of the city of Pompeii.
The Pompeii Archaeological Park announced Spot, a dog-like robot developed by The US firm Boston Dynamics, is now wandering the ancient ruins of the city which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption nearly 2,000 years ago.
The park said Spot’s duties include inspecting the ancient buildings for dangerous structural issues, assessing the progress of restoration work and identifying and inspecting tunnels created by relic thieves.
The robot is the latest in a series of efforts to improve conditions at the park, which was cited by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in 2013 as a possible addition to its list of world heritage sites in peril.
Enormous nine-inch lemon!
A bakery owner has gone on a citrus cooking spree after discovering a nine-inch lemon that weighs almost 1.8kg.
Tammy Warren spotted the yellow whopper in Wiltshire and believes the fruit, which dwarves her baby’s head, is roughly 17 times the size of a standard lemon.
The mum bought the fruit for £5 and set about creating a lemon and blueberry cake, lemon cupcakes, lemon cake pops and a lemon drizzle loaf, lemon syrup, lemon marmalade, fresh lemonade, lemon curd, candied lemon peel and put lemon segments for further treats.
There was still leftover flesh and zest, from which she made a lemon chicken dinner. Tammy plans to keep the seeds and grow their own lemon plant.
A woman collects 19,827 cow-related items in ‘Mooseum’
A Minnesota woman holds the Guinness World Record for the largest collection of cow-related items, with 19,827 pieces now in her possession.
Ruth Klossner, whose home in Lafayette is now known as the Cow Collector’s Mooseum, was awarded the Guinness World Record in 2015, when her collection numbered 15,144 pieces.
Her collection of cow items includes toys, statues, snow globes, pillows, clothing, a chess set and even a wine decanting set.
Klossner is offering tours of the Mooseum by appointment and she holds an open house for cow-loving visitors each year in the summer.
