Two policemen wounded in separate ‘encounters’

KARACHI: A policeman was shot at and critically wounded in the Liaquatabad area on Thursday.

According to the Sharifabad police, two policemen, Basit Ali and Ghulam Murtaza, were patrolling the area on a motorbike when they saw three men roaming suspiciously near Liaquatabad-10. They tried to ask the suspects about their identity and purpose of their movement but the suspects opened fire on the policemen, wounding constable Basit Ali.

The police retaliated but the suspects managed to escape taking advantage of a crowd present there. Constable Basit suffered bullet wounds in his neck and his condition was stated to be serious. He got admitted to the Aga Khan University Hospital for treatment.

West-DIG Nasir Aftab visited the constable at the hospital to inquire about his health.

In another incident, an assistant sub-inspector was wounded in an alleged encounter in Orangi Town’s Altaf Nagar locality.

The police said that in an exchange of fire between two suspected dacoits and police, ASI Zafar and both suspects were wounded. The suspects were later identified as Afzal and Shafiq, who were arrested.

ASI Zafar was taken to the Aga Khan University Hospital for treatment. West-SSP Dr Farrukh Raza said the police officer’s condition was out of danger.

The police said the arrested suspects were involved in several robberies and had been arrested in the past as well.
