ST activist gunned down in ‘targeted attack’

KARACHI: An activist of the Sunni Tehreek was gunned down in what his party described as an incident of targeted killing in New Karachi in the small hours of Sunday morning.

Police said Mohammed Yusuf, 45, was targeted by unknown assailants riding on a motorbike near a mosque in Sector-5-E when he was sitting in a street late on Saturday night.

Bilal Colony SHO Nawaz Ali Brohi said that he was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. He said the incident took place in congested locality, where mostly members of a religious party lived.

Though the police were investigating to ascertain the exact motive of the murder, ST spokesperson Faheem Shaikh said that the victim, Mohammed Yusuf Qadri, was associated with the party for the past three decades.

He opined that it appeared to be an incident of targeted killing. He said he suffered four bullet wounds and died on the spot. The victim was a cloth merchant by profession, he said.

The ST spokesperson said that law enforcement agencies had restored peace and order in the metropolis and the targeted killing of the senior activist appeared to be an attempt by certain elements who wanted to ‘sabotage’ the peaceful environment in the provincial capital.

The party urged the higher authorities to take notice of the killing and bring the culprits to justice.
