STUDENT POLITICS
STUDENT POLITICS: The participation of students in politics has its positives, but it has also given rise to ethical, sectarian and cultural differences, leading to various shades of radicalism in the country. The recent riot at Punjab University, one of the biggest national educational institutions, is a perfect example of such a negative development. It affects the peaceful atmosphere of the institution. The authorities concerned must think about it seriously and take some practical steps to ensure a peaceful, conflict-free campus environment.

IRREPARABLE DAMAGE: The previous government, which is in the opposition today, caused considerable damage to the country’s economic indicators. The current government has a massive task on its hands in terms of finding a way out of the tight spot it finds itself in. As for the masses, the slide continues.

IMAGE OF JUDICIARY: The recent proceedings in the higher courts, as portrayed by the national media, is bringing the image of the judiciary into question. The layperson cannot tell who is doing what. It is up to the national institutions to worry about their image in public. The courts would do well to provide speedy justice to the masses without delay.

TRAGIC AND FRUSTRATING: The despicable gang-rape incident involving a 25-year-old woman by ticket checkers of a train has once again proved that our society is not safe for women. However, one should admire the courage and conviction of the woman who was brave enough to file an FIR against the rapists, enabling the police to take timely action. Unluckily, many rape cases go unnoticed as the victims prefer silence in such matters. Having said that, silence does encourage the criminals. The rapists in the current case must be given exemplary punishment so that no one may dare do it again.
