GAS PIPELINE

More than 30 houses in Gulshan-i-Iqbal Block 13-D have been deprived of gas supply for the last six months. Several complaints have been lodged with the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), but the officials insist that they do not have the funds to install a new pipeline that is needed to resolve the situation. It is a headache to arrange LPG cylinders for everyday use, and naturally it is an unjustified expense. The authorities concerned should release the required funds and ease the suffering of the customers.

EXIT FROM THE SCENE: The curtain has fallen on the tenure of the chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). There are no apparent legal basis yet, but in public perception his tenure will always be remembered as a controversial phase of our national life on several fronts. It is a poor legacy to leave behind. History will struggle to remember him fondly.

DYING LIBRARIES: The one characteristic common among all governments in Pakistan is that they remain focussed on short-term results at the cost of long-term benefits. A case in point is the number of libraries that has gone down in the country over the years just because the governments failed to invest in them. The reading habit in the young generation is going down and the absence of libraries is accelerating the pace at which it is going down. The government needs to establish more libraries and upgrade the existing ones. It should also create awareness among the people about the benefits of book-reading.

DRIVING LICENCE: The main driving licence office located in Clifton is a total disappointment. It lacks the requisite facilities for senior citizens. Moreover, there is no policy of refund. I recently paid Rs2,300 (Challan No. 8696067972) to get my licence, but was rejected for having a weak eye. The higher-ups must revisit their policies and at least offer a refund in such cases.
