POWER CRISIS

POWER CRISIS: Power outages have intensified and reports indicate there is much worse in store. We may keep writing letters to these columns, but the relevant authorities, it seems, have decided not to do anything except using this opportunity to raise the per-unit price of whatever power they supply. Apart from hurting the country’s industrial activity, these power outages affect citizens’ mental and physical health. The government must do something about the mess before things go out of control.

MONSOON RAINS: The first monsoon shower left major thoroughfares and arteries in Karachi inundated, resulting in traffic jams on crucial roads and power supply disruption in several areas. Rain water along with sewage overflow can be seen on the streets. And all this happened after the first rain spell of the season during which ‘above average’ rainfall has been predicted. Those who would survive the season will write what the situation is like at the end of the season!

HUMAN DIGNITY: Recently, a video of a health clerk of the District Health Office (DHO) in Mirpurkhas went viral in which he was seen getting physical with a presiding officer during the local government elections in Sindh. That was not only a blatant violation of the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) rules, but was also against the dignity of a human being. The ECP should take notice of the incident to ensure transparent and peaceful elections in the future.

ABSOLUTE DISGRACE: A local influential slapping the presiding officer during Sindh’s local government elections in Mirpurkhas was actually a slap in the face of society. Unfortunately, we have lost our values. We find it acceptable to disrespect someone in public. The incident was recorded on camera and the video went viral on social media, raising the chances that some action might be taken against the culprit.
