Floating solar power project on Keenjhar Lake planned

KARACHI: Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Sheikh has said that Sindh’s first floating solar power project of 500 MW would be launched soon on Keenjhar Lake.

“Work on the feasibility report of the project is in full swing and it is hoped that the project will start generating electricity in two years after going through the approval stages,” he said.

The minister said this while talking to officials of power companies the other day.

He said that this first and unique floating solar power plant project of its kind in Pakistan would not only provide 500 MW of environmentally friendly electricity but also create employment opportunities in the province.

“Keenjhar Lake will promote tourism and help in controlling loadshedding,” he added.

Mr Sheikh said that work on the feasibility report of the project was in the process of completion and it was expected that the project would start generating electricity in the next two years.

He said that a Letter of Intent (LoI) had been issued and the company concerned was expected to invest $40 million in the project.

In April, an official of the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) had announced the “country’s first floating solar power project in Tarbela and Ghazi Barotha barrages” and claimed that it would help add 300MW of low-cost electricity in the national distribution system.
