Wonder Craft: Paper roll desk organiser

This week, we are again making a multi-section desk organiser using empty kitchen towel or toilet paper rolls, whatever easily available to you. This organiser is going to make your life easy, especially when you are doing your homework, as you will get all your stationery items at one place. And you won’t be needing a new one at least for this term.

The good thing is you can make as beautiful and customised as you want it to be, letting your creativity show.

Things you need:

  1. Empty kitchen towel rolls 8 (or more or use empty toilet paper rolls)
  2. Hot glue gun
  3. Glue stick
  4. Pieces of coloured papers
  5. Patterned or gift paper (Optional)
  6. Scissors or paper cutter
  7. A hard sheet, (you can use flattened carton)
  8. Pencil
  9. Ruler

Directions:

Note: You can think of any colour theme and make the organiser. For instance, cover the rolls with any light-coloured paper and highlight the edges with its darker shade; or cover the rolls with white paper and paste coloured paper on the borders.

  1. Kitchen towel rolls are roughly 9-inches long. Measure 5-inches and cut. You will need five of such rolls; picture 2.

  2. Leaving 1-inch from both sides of these rolls, cut out a rectangle (3-inches long and 1.5-inches wide) from the middle, repeat the step on all five; picture 3 and 4.

  3. Take three more kitchen towel rolls and cut one side diagonally. Keep them an inch smaller than the other, pictures 5 and 6.

  4. Take the leftover rolls and cut all in different sizes; you will need at least four.

  5. Now, put all the rolls on the hardboard piece (the base of the desk organiser). Measure the sizes and draw a line around so that you can have an idea of how you are going to make the organiser, I have made a square-shaped base, and at one side an extended circle, the size of the roll. See pictures 7 and 8.

  6. Secure the endings of the rolls with a piece of cardboard and cover the base and all the rolls with the coloured paper, pictures 9 and 10.

  7. Next, using hot glue, paste the long rolls on to each other and paste them on the left side of the base as shown in picture 11.

  8. Paste the green rolls with each other, picture 12.

  9. Join five more paper rolls in an oval shape, these will go under the green rolls and create an arch-type shape; then paste them beside the long rolls, pictures 13 and 14.

  10. Paste the green rolls on to it carefully; paste the coloured paper to give it a neat look, picture 15.

  11. Paste the varied sized-rolls one by one on the right side of the organiser’s base. Picture 16.

Note: In one of the rolls at the right side, I made a diagonal slit, this is to keep the reminders in sight.
