THE population of Karachi is expected to go up by 50,000 as the result of the transfer of Pakistan Government Headquarters to this city. The number of the staff of the Pakistan Government and their families is expected to be 30,000 and the remaining 20,000 will consist of camp followers and businessmen from outside. …[T]he Rationing Officer, Karachi, said that Sind, being a surplus area, there will be no difficulties regarding foodstuffs. … “Cloth”, he said, “will be our real difficulty. People coming from Delhi say that they have deposited their ration cards and cloth coupons at the railway station.”
[Meanwhile, as reported from New Delhi,] The abolition of separate electorates; reservation of seats for the different recognised minorities in the various legislatures on the basis of their population initially for a period of 10 years; safeguards for the Anglo-Indian community for a period of 10 years and certain non-justiciable principles to be incorporated in the Fundamental Rights of the subjects, were the main features of the three reports which Sardar Patel presented to the Constituent Assembly… . — Dawn Karachi
