From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1947: Seventy-five years ago: Communal clashes
NEW DELHI: Nineteen people were killed and 34 injured in a communal clash yesterday [Sept 4] in the Tajmurid Khan area, under the Sabzimandi police station, Delhi, according to a Press note issued by the District Magistrate… . Three people were arrested… . Twelve people were killed and 50 injured in the clashes in New Delhi. …The people fired at the looters and three people were killed. A large number of arrests were made and families of minority communities who were besieged … were evacuated by the Deputy Commissioner to safe areas. Following a number of incidents of communal rioting and looting the District Magistrate for the first time imposed curfew in two areas in the New Delhi Municipality.
[Meanwhile, as reported from Lahore,] Police activity in the city and the rural areas of Lahore has been further intensified against the un-social elements. During the last two days, property worth Rs 5,00,000 believed to have been looted during the recent disturbances, has been recovered from the country-side. In Lahore, several streets were found littered with looted goods which were thrown away by the looters fearing police action and property valued at Rs 3,50,000 has been recovered during the last two days.
