BEYOND CHARITY

This is with reference to the article “What’s to be done” (Sep 2) which argued that charity alone is not enough to tackle the destruction caused by climate change. I agree, but wonder who will do what is needed? Who will work for the development of the masses? The answers are simple. No one will work till they know there will be accountability. This is how human psyche works. More importantly, this is how Pakistani psyche works.

LEADERSHIP CRISIS: Many expatriates are said to be reluctant to donate heavily towards government’s flood relief campaign. The government and opposition spare no opportunity to malign each other. Even a crisis of the current scale and intensity is unable to bring political parties on a united platform. The failure of political forces to unite at this critical juncture will further polarise society and erode citizens’ trust in the political process.

FLOODWATER: Every few years the country encounters heavy floods which cause massive destruction. Millions of gallons of water go to waste owing to the lack of a proper mechanism to store floodwater for the proverbial rainy day. We can avoid destruction to a great extent through small dams and micro-reservoirs which will help us meet the water needs of our people for many years to come.

We need to learn some lessons quickly.

REGULATING CONTENT: This is with reference to the article ‘Getting rich on YouTube’ (Sep 7). I am an ardent believer of the regulation of content that gets aired on social media. There is explicit content on platforms, such as YouTube, that are easily accessible to young users who have impressionable minds and the pitfalls inherent in the situation are too obvious to be denied. And this comes at a cost of psychological impact. Regulation of social media platforms at least to some extent has actually become inevitable.
