From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1947: Seventy-five years ago: Accession of Junagadh
There remains no extant copy of today’s Dawn and the excerpt below is from the previous day’s issue.
OBSERVATIONS made by the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar relating to the accession of Junagadh State to Pakistan were described by the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Pakistan Government, Mr Liaquat Ali Khan, as “ill-informed as to facts and legal position”, in a Press communique issued in Karachi yesterday evening [Sept 25]. Mr Liaquat Ali Khan pointed out that in view of the communal frenzy in existence at present the Jam Saheb’s statement was full of possibilities of incalculable evil. “The Jam Saheb has attempted to raise a smoke-screen by introducing sensationalism in connection with the very first State that has acceded to Pakistan,” he declared. A communique was also released last night by the States’ Ministry, explaining the Government of India’s policy on the question of Junagadh joining Pakistan. This communique suggested the holding of a referendum in the State. — News agencies
