KARACHI: The Governor of Sindh … yesterday [Oct 1] promulgated two University Ordinances — the University of Karachi Ordinance 1972 and the University of Sind Ordinance 1972 — to reconstitute and reorganise the Universities for the purpose of giving them necessary autonomy and improving their administration. The Ordinances were made effective immediately. … Under the Ordinances, the three main bodies of the two Universities … Syndicate, Senate and Academic Council, also known as the Authorities, will have the representation of students, teachers and other categories (excluding officers of the University)… . — Staff reporter

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies in Karachi,] Dr Mubashir Hasan, Central Minister for Finance, Planning and Development … described the economy of Pakistan as “strong and viable” and [said that it] did not have even a remote chance of collapsing. … Dr Mubashir discounted all the rumours about the state of the country’s economy and said: “Our performance during the last 10 months in the financial field has been beyond the dream of even the most optimistic observers.” “Never as a defeated nation has so much mettle been shown by any other nation except Pakistani peasants and labour”… .
