Man booked for hurling threats at journalist

HARIPUR: The police here on Wednesday registered a criminal case against a man for allegedly hurling life threats at a local journalist.

City police quoted Bakhtzada Khan, general secretary of Haripur Union of Journalists(HUJ), as saying that he published a news item in one of Urdu language newspapers pointing out the unchecked sale of ice drug in Pandak village.

He said that he did not mention anyone being involved in the drug business in his news report, but the other day when he was going to his office one Shehryar of Pandak village came on his motorcycle and intercepted him.

β€œHe stopped by me brandishing a pistol and used abusive language before hurling life threats at me,” the complainant told police. Bakhtzada stated that when he called his brother and friends the accused escaped.

The local correspondent of the Urdu daily said he had no enmity with the accused. On his complaint to District Police Officer Imran Shahid, the city police had registered a criminal case against Shehryar under section 341 and 506 of the PPC.

Meanwhile, at a meeting of Haripur Press Club, Haripur Union of Journalists and Electronic Media Association of Haripur, the journalists condemned the incident and demanded early arrest of the accused and protection to the family members of the complainant.

They also demanded an operation against drug peddlers in the district.
